Great Migration 2026: A Honest Guide to River Crossings
Joseph Lemayan · 30 September 2026
No operator can guarantee a Mara River crossing. Anyone who does is selling theatre.
The migration is a year-long loop. Calving on the southern Serengeti short grass (December–March), the move north through the western corridor (April–June), arrivals in the Mara from July, and a gradual return south from October.
Crossings happen when herds mass on a bank and one animal commits. That can be 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. or not at all that day. Our job is to put you in river country at the right time of year, with a guide who reads dust, vultures and radio traffic — then wait without ruining the moment.
For 2026 we recommend a minimum of three full days in the northern Mara in August or September, a conservancy night for space, and a balloon morning because the aerial view of the herds is unforgettable even without a crossing.
If dates are fixed in January, we will not pretend. We will sell you cats, light and fewer vehicles — which many guests later admit they preferred.
