Diani vs Watamu vs Lamu: Which Kenyan Beach Is Yours?
Amina Wanjiku · 30 September 2026
Kenya’s coastline is not interchangeable. Choose with intent.
Diani, south of Mombasa, is the all-rounder: 20 km of pale sand, a long resort strip, kitesurfing, Kisite-Mpunguti snorkelling, nightlife if you want it, and the easiest logistics (Ukunda airstrip). Families and first-time visitors land here for a reason.
Watamu, north of Mombasa, is quieter, more marine. The reef is close, the Bio-Ken snake farm and Malindi heritage sit nearby, and the vibe is village-plus-boutique. Better for snorkellers and travellers who want fewer touts.
Lamu is not a beach holiday in the Diani sense. It is a Swahili town of donkeys, dhows and UNESCO streets, with Shela’s dunes and houses with cooks. There are no cars. It is slower, more expensive, and the most romantic.
Nayora pattern: safari + Diani for most, safari + Watamu for reef lovers, safari + Lamu for honeymoons and repeat guests.
