Best Time to Visit the Maasai Mara in 2026
Amina Wanjiku · 30 September 2026
The Maasai Mara is a year-round destination, but the trip you want should dictate the month you book.
July to October is the Great Migration window, when wildebeest and zebra push into the Mara from the Serengeti and river crossings become possible. It is also peak rate season: park fees are higher, camps fill six to nine months out, and balloon slots vanish. If a crossing is your dream, travel with flexibility inside a week — animals do not keep appointments.
January to March is our favourite secret. The grass is short, skies are clear, cats are easier to find, and Amboseli’s Kilimanjaro views are at their best if you are combining parks. Rates sit below high season.
April and May are the long rains. Some camps close; those that stay open offer serious value, dramatic skies and almost private reserves. Roads can be sticky — we switch to the right vehicles.
November and early December bring the short rains: hot, green, and excellent for birding. Festive dates from 15 December behave like high season again.
Nayora’s advice: book migration 2026 now, travel shoulder season if you care more about cats than crossings, and always pair the Mara with a coast stay if you have seven days or more.
